4 Steps to Finding the Right Glasses for Your Face Shape

Finding the perfect pair of glasses can be quite a challenge. No accessory has as much impact on your appearance and can transform your style like a pair of glasses. In this blog, we'll show you how to find the right glasses for you in four simple steps. The four key factors are color, material, style, and frame shape:

  1. Finding the Right Glasses: What Color? First and foremost, your glasses should complement as many of your outfits as possible. Especially for your first pair of glasses, consider a neutral color that goes well with your wardrobe. This includes black, white, gray, and all shades of beige and brown. Dark blue, khaki green, and earth tones are also considered neutral colors and are easy to mix and match.

Consider the contrast between the color of your glasses and your complexion. If you have a low-contrast complexion (fair skin, light eyes, and hair), a lighter glasses color will harmonize well with your look.

Conversely, if you have a high-contrast complexion, you can pull off a boldly contrasting glasses color. You can even intentionally create contrast, especially as your hair color changes with age. For many older individuals, the right pair of glasses can restore faded natural colors and add vibrancy to their appearance.

  1. Finding the Right Glasses: What Patterns? Patterns can play a significant role in expressing certain personality traits through fashion, and glasses are no exception, albeit in a subtler way. Pay attention to different materials.

When your glasses feature an eye-catching pattern, they become a focal point of your look and make a strong statement. This can be exciting, but it might limit your ability to pair them with patterned tops or scarves. If you frequently wear patterns, opting for simpler glasses frames is a more versatile choice.

For metal frames, choose a metal color that complements your jewelry, either gold or silver, depending on whether you prefer warm or cool tones.

In general, ornate and intricate designs, as well as patterns on the temple arms of the glasses, turn your glasses into decorative pieces on your face. If you also wear earrings, necklaces, or scarves, it can quickly become overwhelming.

  1. Finding the Right Glasses: What Style and Type Suits Me? Certain eyeglass styles are automatically associated with icons: John Lennon's round metal glasses in the 60s, Woody Allen and Johnny Depp with their black Panto frames, or Meryl Streep with her butterfly-shaped frames.

Consider which characteristics align with your personality. How do you want to be perceived?

Horn-rimmed glasses are still linked to intellectualism and erudition. Lightweight and less pronounced models convey a more reserved and serious demeanor. The classic dark nerd glasses remain in vogue. For a while, among hipsters, bigger and bolder frames were considered cooler. However, this is purely a matter of personal taste. Some may find it deliberate, while others may find it stylish.

  1. Finding the Right Glasses: Which Shape Suits Me? Your face shape determines the right glasses shape for you. Square faces can soften with round or curved frames, while round faces can gain more defined features with angular frames. High lenses in full-rim frames can make long faces appear shorter, while delicate frames complement heart-shaped and petite faces.

The cheek area is often the widest part of the face and thus the most prominent. The width of the glasses frame should ideally align with this area. Additionally, the natural arch of your eyebrows significantly influences your appearance. Your face looks more harmonious when the upper edge of your glasses follows the curve of your eyebrows.

Also, pay attention to how your nose looks when trying on glasses. The position of the bridge can make your nose appear shorter or longer, depending on where it sits.

  1. Finding Glasses – My Tip: Visit various eyewear stores and take photos or even short videos of yourself wearing different glasses. Sleep on it for a night. You'll gain a more objective perspective on which glasses truly suit you and your style.

The photos were taken at my favorite optician, glassgo, in Hamburg. They not only offer an excellent selection but also provide expert and honest advice.

Another great option is ace and tate. This young eyewear company offers the free delivery of four glasses that you can select on their website using a virtual try-on. You can try them on at home, take pictures, and decide which one suits you best. Then, send back your selection, provide your prescription, and the chosen model with the appropriate lenses will be delivered to you within one to two weeks. It's an affordable and convenient alternative. Nowadays, you can also find many stores in larger cities where I provide in-person consultations to my clients.
