What Happens When You Don't Change Your Underwear Daily
Our underwear goes through a lot, especially since we wear it in the area where we release most of our bodily secretions daily. Not only do skin flakes and hairs end up there, but also sweat, fecal particles, and vaginal secretions. It's clear that in this warm and cozy environment, microbes and bacteria thrive.
Now, imagine wearing your underwear for several days in a row. Bacteria would multiply, and things would start to smell bad. (Speaking of smell, did you know that certain diseases can be identified by odor?) In fact, even two days is too much! Here's what can happen if you wear your underwear for two consecutive days:
Itchy Sensation
Sweat and toxins exit the body through the skin, often leaving an unpleasant itch behind. It can also start to itch when bacteria and fungi multiply on the skin. To prevent this, you should regularly change and wash your underwear. In the worst case, the itchiness can worsen.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Wearing underwear for too long can cause the bacteria that accumulate in it to migrate to your urinary tract, triggering a UTI. Additionally, if you're prone to UTIs, it's advisable to avoid synthetic underwear and opt for cotton and microfiber panties instead. These materials reduce sweating in the intimate area, allowing trapped bacteria to dry out and be killed. You can read here if UTIs are contagious.
Skin Rash
When the skin comes into contact with many microbes, it reacts, often with an itchy, reddened rash. If underwear isn't changed daily, the combination of secretions and fecal particles can lead to the growth of bacteria and skin rashes.
Lice
Did you know that there are not only head lice but also pubic lice that can infest the intimate area? Poor hygiene and repeatedly worn underwear can increase the risk of getting lice or scabies. Important note: If you suspect pubic lice, a doctor's visit for diagnosis is essential!
