Everything You Need to Know About Your Breasts

Checking, but they just won't grow. Or maybe one day you look down, and there they are: your breasts! Were you surprised? Do they not look the way you hoped or expected? Or are you still waiting and hoping they'll finally grow? Whatever situation you find yourself in, breasts (or their absence) can bring frustration for any young woman.

In the following, you'll find answers to the most common questions about breast development in puberty – because understanding things a bit better can help you embrace them more quickly. When does breast growth begin in puberty?

Early starters may notice "buds" at around 8 years old, but breast development can also begin at 13. Generally, breast growth in puberty lasts three to five years until the breasts reach their final size. However, some girls feel like their breasts have grown overnight, while others develop more slowly. Even after your 20th birthday, your breasts can still grow.

What color should my nipples be?

Their color is exactly the color they should be! Once breast growth begins, the nipples and the surrounding skin area darken slightly. How this coloring ends up looking is different for every girl. Perhaps a few hairs even grow in this area – that's completely normal too.

Is it normal for my breasts to hurt?

For some girls, breasts may be a bit painful in the initial development phase and in the days before their period. Usually, being gentle with them during this time (handle with care and wear a sports bra) helps avoid pain. If you still have significant discomfort, consult your doctor for advice.

My breasts are pointy (or uneven). Is something wrong?

No need to worry! Breasts can look very different and be different sizes, especially during breast development in puberty. They might be pointy or uneven for a while, but these differences usually even out once growth is complete. If your breasts are significantly different in size – at least a 1-cup size difference – talk to your doctor so you can keep an eye on it. A very large difference in size can lead to poor posture and back pain!

What can I do to make my breasts bigger?

You have no control over breast size. Your cup size is largely determined by your parents' genes. There are no pills or special creams that can influence growth. Be proud of your breasts, whether big or small. They are what they are, and that's okay.
