Can Moldy Underwear Be Safe to Wear? How to Remove Mold Stains?

During humid weather, even if we change and wash our underwear daily, mold spots can still appear, especially on lighter colors. These unsightly spots can be a real mood killer. Many women are reluctant to throw away their favorite pieces, but is it safe to continue wearing moldy underwear?

Moldy Underwear: A Breeding Ground for Bacteria

Moldy spots on your underwear indicate that the entire garment is contaminated. At this point, the fabric is teeming with bacteria, which can multiply rapidly—producing 2 million cells from just one in a mere 8 hours. Wearing moldy underwear without proper treatment can lead to breast infections. It's best to avoid wearing moldy underwear if possible. If you can't bear to part with it, make sure to clean it thoroughly first.

How to Remove Mold from Underwear

  1. Boiling Method: The simplest way is to boil the moldy underwear for at least 20 minutes to kill the bacteria. However, this method can damage the fabric, especially lace and colors. While it removes the mold and ensures health safety, it might not be the most pleasing solution. If you're not satisfied, it might be time to toss it.

  2. Specialized Laundry Detergent: Use a detergent specifically designed to remove mold from fabrics or soak the underwear in soapy water. Wash it, then expose it to direct sunlight, and soak it again in soapy water for a few hours. Repeat the washing process as needed.

  3. Rice Water Method: Prepare rice washing water and soak your underwear. This method is similar to using soapy water. Alternatively, you can wash the underwear in water with a small amount of vinegar and milk to remove the musty odor.

For clothes with mold spots, it's not advisable to wear them until the mold is completely removed. The spots harbor many bacteria, which can be harmful when in direct contact with your skin. If the clothing item is old and the mold stains are stubborn, it's recommended to replace it with new underwear for your health and comfort.
