5 steps to consciously deal with clothing and avoid bad purchases

Shopping is fun, but the shopping spree is usually over after 24 hours. Bad purchases included. Instead, learn how to use clothing consciously and sustainably.

Fashion is fun, it seduces us, gives a sense of attractiveness and creates change in appearance. When we look great in a new piece of clothing in the mirror, it just makes us happy.

Shopping also inspires: chic outfits on model dolls always look better than what we have in the closet. You have to access that.

Studies by neurobiologists have found that the shopping spree of bargain hunting triggers the same feelings of happiness that flow through us during sex. Not bad, right?

Tip: Think about the situation and mental state in which you buy new clothes

We are much more inclined towards impulse purchases, especially when we are depressed or sad.

A study in the journal Psychology Today further proves that the anticipation of shopping already releases happy hormones and floods us with dopamine. It is therefore not surprising that around 75% of those surveyed stated that they are now more enthusiastic about online shopping than classic shopping. You can look forward to the new consignment with great anticipation.

The question arises: How often do you need this feeling of happiness when shopping?

And how long does it last? Because of course we always want to look beautiful, feel good and clothes are our second skin. That's how it should be and stay. But even older items of clothing can create a whole new outfit when combined with other items.

I used to shop more...

There were many different fashion trends that I felt I had to follow. And every new piece of clothing that I consciously wanted to dress up with felt like fireworks. bang! There was the rush.

But the atmosphere usually only lasted 24 hours. I often only wore the item a few times or had nothing to combine and had to buy something new to go with it. So spend more money. Frustration! Bad buy!

On the other hand, how long does the mood of a clear conscience last?

With a piece of clothing with which I am dressed sustainably, which I can wear and combine many times?

I have an elegant long mohair cardigan that I have been wearing with enthusiasm for over 6 years. It was expensive, but I'm always happy about it. Financially, it has long since paid for itself. I'm happy again with every new piece of clothing that I can combine with her. It has been a sustained smart buy. And now I've been "rushing" with her for years, so to speak; ).

Tip: Think about it when shopping: will this piece of clothing make me happy in the long term? Can I combine 3 x differently?

It's not always easy to make smart decisions when shopping. The whole shopping industry is based on people not making good decisions.

Distraction, seduction, entertainment, soul balm!

I have a friend who always advises me on successfully completed major orders: "Now you deserve a reward, why not buy yourself something nice to wear."
But for me, shopping as a reward is not appealing - a glass of champagne or a delicious meal the Japanese now lures me more :).

Tip:
Think about how you reward yourself and how long you can enjoy a piece of clothing on average.

When was your last purchase and how often do you wear it? Don't get me wrong - I don't want to spoil the fun for you - but I always see so many corpses in my closet checks that it just hurts my wallet.

Are there evergreens in your closet?

Do you have items of clothing, such as a blue sweater, that you would buy again and again and that you really like to wear? Then this is probably a “best basic” that you consciously like to wear because you feel comfortable in it and can combine it often over the long term.

Do you always feel really comfortable in your clothes?

I think we only feel comfortable in our clothes if they really suit us. This creates a positive feeling in us. When you stand in front of the mirror, it makes a difference whether you simply put something on yourself that makes you feel mediocre to bad, or whether you consciously use your appearance for good self-esteem and the happiness associated with it.

Clothing that suits you and in which you feel really good and comfortable creates a positive feeling in you! And you probably have a lot of them in your closet.

Tip: Wear an outfit that doesn't correspond to the comfortable "normal state", but is more WOW. What is usually meant for "chicier occasions" and see how you feel after a normal day in these clothes.

When we wear a piece of clothing, we automatically assume some of its characteristics, even if we are not aware of it. Maybe then you will also become more WOW ?! I wish you a lot of fun trying it out.
