Warm Feet

Many people know the problem of cold toes, feet, fingers or hands.

Often you freeze first on your hands and feet, although otherwise you are quite warm. If you want your feet to stay warm, it is not enough to concentrate on them. Warm feet are a matter of the whole body. When the body gets cold, it primarily supplies heat to the heart, brain and other vital organs. Blood flow to the hands and feet, on the other hand, decreases.

1) Keep your body warm by wearing a hat

To avoid freezing to the feet, it is therefore important to be properly dressed on the rest of the body. A head without a cap acts like a chimney from which much of the body heat escapes.

2) Do not forget to eat and drink

To maintain its heat balance, the body needs energy. Therefore, do not forget to eat and drink enough. Staying warm does not necessarily require warm drinks. The important thing is that food and drinks are high in energy.
Do not let body heat escape.
Shoes serve to keep out the cold and not let the heat produced by the body escape. They must protect the feet from cold, wet and wind. If possible, shoes should also be able to wick moisture away from the foot. They must ensure stability, have a good fit and must not chafe. The multi-layer principle is an effective way to dress properly for cold climates. It facilitates the transport of moisture away from the skin. In addition, the different layers trap air, which insulates body heat. With the multi-layer principle, you are flexible and well protected from the cold, wind and wet. Of course, what applies to the body as a whole also applies to the feet, hands and head.

3) Wear two pairs of socks

The multi-layer principle also applies when it comes to socks: wear a thin, well-fitting sock directly on your foot. On top of that, a thicker one that wicks moisture away from the foot and traps a maximum amount of air. In this way you also avoid blisters on the feet, since the friction is between the socks and not on the skin.

4) Do not dissipate heat

Much of the heat from the feet is transferred to a cold surface. Therefore, it is important that the distance to the cold ground is as large as possible. Pay special attention to your shoes until there is again a balance between the inside and the outside. Socks with a high percentage of cotton hinder the escape of foot sweat. Conclusion: the foot first becomes damp, then cold. an insulating insole, preferably made of wool. And stand preferably on a mat, a piece of frigolite or brushwood, so that the heat is not conducted into the cold ground.

Make sure your feet are dry. Wet feet quickly turn into cold feet. During light activity, the foot secretes about 3 grams of moisture per hour. Heavy work can cause perspiration of up to 30 g or more per hour. In order not to freeze to the feet in cold weather, they must above all be dry. This requires effective moisture dissipation, because water is a 25 times better heat conductor than air. So if the feet are damp, considerable heat loss is inevitable.

5) Wear the right socks

To avoid cold feet, they must first and foremost stay dry. Therefore, wear socks made of moisture-wicking material, such as wool. Wool also has excellent absorption capacity. It can absorb an amount of moisture up to 30% of its own weight without feeling damp. Damp wool even gives off a little extra heat, absorption heat.

6) Change your socks frequently

Change your socks just before you go outside in the cold. Otherwise, the heat indoors could cause your socks to already be too warm and damp. Always take a pair of clean and dry socks with you to change and change several times a day.

7) Dry the socks when they are damp

Use your body heat to get your damp socks warm and dry. To do this, tuck your socks into your waistband when you are in motion. Because of the body heat, they will dry automatically this way.
Ventilate more. There is often a connection between cold feet and poor ventilation. Usually the material of socks, shoes and boots is too dense, so only a small part of the moisture can escape through the shoe as vapor. In such a case, the footwear proves to be a moisture barrier.

8) Drain the moisture by means of wool

If the moisture content between the foot and the sock is higher than that on the outside of the sock, wool starts to "work", absorbing the moisture and transporting it through the material away from the foot.

9) Take off your shoes

Take off your shoes when you take a break. This will allow the moisture in the shoe to escape through the upper. Think about blood circulation. If blood flow to the feet is impeded for any reason, they will cool down quickly. Caution. If you notice your toes starting to go numb, this could be a sign of frostbite starting to set in.

10) Make sure there is enough room in your shoes

It is important that your shoes are big enough and not laced too tightly. In shoes that are too tight, blood circulation is impeded and feet get cold quickly. Shoes must be large enough to allow you to move your toes.

11) Keep the toes and feet constantly moving

Moving your toes and feet stimulates blood circulation, increases temperature and reduces the risk of localized frostbite.

12) Take care of your feet

Taking care of your feet is very important. Clean and dry feet promote blood circulation, can better withstand cold and protect against blisters. Do not use water-based foot cream, because the water contained in the cream can freeze in low temperatures and cause frostbite.

13) Move

Change countries, to Andalusia or Sicily. Anyway, the south is nice and warm and the winter is shorter.
