How Is A Bra Supposed To Fit: Find Out A Good Bra Does Not Hurt

What women should consider when buying a bra? How is a bra supposed to fit? The wrong bra can cause damage to the health. But women with large bust sizes often find it hard to find a well-fitting model.

Buying a bra has long been Ruth Weber (name changed) no longer enjoys joy anymore. The 67-year-old lady has a cup size double-D and a circumference of 85 cm under the breast of 85 cm. She says: I just can't find a bra that fits properly and is comfortable.

Cut in at the back or press on the shoulders. That hurts, really hurts, says Weber.

She is not alone in her problem. Senior physician Elisabeth A. Kappos, a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at Basel University Hospital, says, We hear this from patients all the time. Breasts change with age. The breasts grow again after menopause, and grow again after menopause. In addition connective tissue stretches over the years, and the breasts hang lower. This can cause additional discomfort, Kappos says. Many women tend to wear bras that are too small bras.

Pressure points: Powdering is better than padding

Some women try to pad the cushion the pressure points. That can lead to further problems, they say. Kappos says, "First it itches, then the area reddens redness and the area can become inflamed." It's better to powder the areas, he says. Patients also often report neck or shoulder pain. "The weight of the large breasts pulls down," she says. This leads to posture and tension. What's more, "the pain can radiate to the neck, head and arms."

The remedy is a bra that provides good support. Karin Sollberger works in a specialty store for medical products in Köniz BE. She knows: "The bra must provide support in the right support in the right places - under the and on the side." There, material must be firm yet slightly stretchy. Ideals are microfiber or a mixture of microfiber, cotton and spandex.

A bra with metal underwires provides good support when it fits perfectly: "If the underwire is in the wrong place, It chafes or presses additionally," says Karin Sollberger. If the between the cups touches the rib cage, the bra fits correctly. The underbust band with the fastener should be at the same height around the entire not higher at the back than at the front higher at the back than at the front (see graphic). For large bust size, the band should be wide, and the closure should have at least three to four hooks. Sollberger: "Otherwise the the weight of the bust pulls the back upwards."

The straps should rest on the shoulder, but never cut in. "Ideally, the underbust band and the cups take over the support function," says Sollberger. The straps are also important for large breasts. The expert advises wider, adjustable straps that rest on the middle of the shoulder - exactly between the neck and shoulder joint.
