When Should Girls Start & Stop Wearing Bras? Expert Advice

When Should Girls Start Wearing Bras?

The appropriate age for girls to start wearing bras varies depending on the rate and extent of breast development. Breast development is influenced by factors such as genetics, hormones, nutrition, and exercise. During puberty, it's essential to allow the breasts to develop fully without restrictions.
Generally, girls should begin wearing bras when their breasts are well-developed and the distance from the top to the bottom of the breast, measured with a soft ruler, exceeds 16 centimeters. This usually occurs around the age of 16-18, when the chest and breasts are nearly mature. If the breast measurement is less than 16 centimeters before 16 years old, wearing a bra may be premature and could hinder proper development and future milk production.

Benefits of Wearing a Bra:

Maintains breast cleanliness and supports breast circulation, facilitating healthy growth.
Reduces breast movement during walking, exercise, and physical labor, preventing sagging.
Enhances breast shape and fullness, addressing small breast size.

When Should Women Stop Wearing Bras?

Wearing a bra is not solely for aesthetics; it provides essential support to the breasts, which lack muscular or bony structures. Without proper support, breasts can sag due to gravity, impacting posture and potentially leading to spinal issues. For elderly women, sagging breasts can compress the lungs, causing breathing difficulties, and affect digestion.
While some experts suggest that bras may not be necessary after 65 due to weakening breast ligaments, this should be individualized. Many women over 65 remain active and healthy, requiring bra support for daily activities, fitness, and travel. Wearing a bra can also boost self-confidence and overall well-being.

Choosing Bras for Older Women:

Look for bras with simple designs, soft materials, appropriate thickness, and good breathability. Cotton bras without rigid underwires are ideal. For ease of use, opt for bras with front closures, preferably snap buttons, considering older individuals' dexterity. Remember to remove bras at night to allow the breasts and back muscles to relax and maintain good circulation.
