Underwear: What’s the Purpose of the Bow on Panties?
The Secret Behind the Bow:
Unveiling the History of
Women's Underwear
Lace lingerie, hipsters, or jazz pants? As varied as women’s underwear can be, there’s one thing they (almost) always have in common: the little bow at the front of the panties. But what’s it actually for? Just decoration - or does it serve a purpose? The answer is: both. Nowadays, the bow is indeed just there because it looks pretty. In the past, over 100 years ago, it had a real function. Back then, the little bow ensured that the ladies of the world wouldn’t lose their panties. Women’s panties weren’t made of comfortable, stretchy fabrics back then. Elastic underwear didn’t exist. Instead, a band went all the way around the panties - and was tied into a bow at the front. This helped the panties stay on better.
And the bow also helped women put their panties on the right way around in the past. Because women often had to get up very early and in absolute darkness, they could quickly feel where the front and back were by touching the bow.
