Breast Growth: How Your Bust Changes in Your 20s, 30s, and 40s
Breast Growth in Your 20s: Constant Changes
In your twenties, your breasts can actually change in size. The reason for this is that during this decade, a girl's body transforms into a woman's body, which means you gain weight and become curvier.
Additionally, some women get pregnant or stop taking birth control pills in their twenties. The breast visibly reacts to hormonal changes. Especially after pregnancy, the breast may not look the same as before. For some women, it gets a bit larger, while for others, it may become smaller than before pregnancy. Also, during pregnancy, the nipples can become larger, and the areola darkens.
Menstruation can also change in your twenties, which is completely normal. Occasionally, or regularly before or during your period, your breasts may swell.
Moreover, hormonal changes during this time can lead to the formation and self-resolution of breast lumps. However, if these lumps are painful or continually getting larger, you should discuss it with your gynecologist.
Breast Changes in Your 30s: Breast Expansion and Stretching
After one or more childbirths, the breasts may no longer be as firm. The reason for this is the significant weight gain and loss during pregnancy, which puts a strain on the breasts. Consequently, the breasts may become somewhat less firm and sag. Stretch marks from pregnancy can also occur, but they are a natural outcome and nothing to be ashamed of.
How Your Breasts Change in Your 40s
In your forties, your body is approaching menopause. The ovaries produce less estrogen, leading to a reduction in breast tissue. The body replaces it with fat, making the breasts feel softer but less firm.
During this period, breast lumps can also develop again. Doctors recommend regular check-ups and daily breast self-examinations.
As you age, it becomes more likely that the breasts will begin to sag. Their elasticity decreases as the body produces less collagen (the protein in connective tissue) with age.
Additionally, breast density decreases, which is one of the reasons why doctors recommend mammography (X-ray of the breasts) for women over 40. With lower breast density, they can better examine the breasts.
